How to Win at Career Transitions

Career transitions can be totally disorienting. Whether you're trying to switch industries, starting your own side hustle, or getting back into the workforce after a break, there are so many unknowns and uncertainties that can really throw you for a loop.

One of the biggest obstacles that people face during a career transition is their own negative self-talk and limiting beliefs. These are the self-imposed barriers that we create in our minds that hold us back from pursuing our dreams and achieving our goals.

Let's be real, these limiting beliefs can seriously mess with our well-being. They can lead to feelings of self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and all sorts of other negative emotions that can impact our mental health. So, if you're going through a career transition and struggling with limiting beliefs, here are some tips for taking care of your well-being and overcoming those pesky thoughts.

  1. Recognize your negative self-talk: The first step in overcoming limiting beliefs is recognizing when they pop up. Start paying attention to your thoughts and the words you use when you talk to yourself. If you catch yourself saying things like "I'm not good enough" or "I'll never make it," take a deep breath and acknowledge that these thoughts are not helpful.

  2. Challenge your negative thoughts: Once you recognize your negative self-talk, challenge those thoughts. Ask yourself questions like "Is this really true?" or "What evidence do I have to support this belief?" Chances are, you'll find that these limiting beliefs are based on assumptions rather than facts.

  3. Reframe your beliefs: Instead of focusing on what you can't do, try reframing your beliefs in a more positive light. For example, instead of thinking "I don't have enough experience for this job," try thinking "I have a unique set of skills that can be valuable in this role."

  4. Take care of your well-being: Career transitions can be stressful, so it's important to take care of your well-being. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly. Take breaks when you need them and make time for self-care activities that bring you joy.

  5. Surround yourself with positive influences: Finally, surround yourself with people who support you and lift you up. Seek out mentors, coaches, and supportive friends and family members who can help you stay positive and motivated during your career transition.
